Holmby Hills

Holmby Hills is one of the country’s most prestigious and affluent neighborhoods. Along with neighboring Beverly Hills and Bel-Air, Holmby Hills is part of Los Angeles’ renowned “Platinum Triangle.”

The Holmby Hills neighborhood is a collection of prominent properties defined by affluence and luxury. Holmby Hills’ homes also offer an unparalleled level of privacy, a quality that has made the area quite appealing to a collection of celebrities, entertainment executives, and high-profile individuals. Over the years, Holmby Hills has been home to everyone including the rich and famous. In the 1950s, Walt Disney built his dream home here, that featured a miniature live steam railroad, complete with 2,615 feet (797 m) of track and a 90-foot (27 m)-long tunnel. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Gary Cooper, Barbra Streisand, Irene Dunne, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Jack Benny, Kelsey Grammer, Jack Black, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr., Sonny & Cher, Nat King Cole, Marilyn Monroe, and movie mogul Ray Stark have all called Holmby Hills their home. Lloyd Bridges and his wife, Dorothy Bridges, also raised their children, actors Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges, in the neighborhood.

Holmby Hills was developed in the late 1800s by English millionaire, Arthur Letts Sr, who made his money as the founder of the Broadway and the Bullocks department stores. His goal was to develop the land into an area boasting great grand estates that reflected the opulent touches of his English birthplace.

He personally christened the development “Holmby Hills”, which some say was loosely derived from the name of his birthplace which was a small hamlet in England called Holdenby.

After Letts’ death, his son-in-law, Harold Janss, took over the reigns on this residential estate development project and created Holmby Hills into the magnificently grand neighborhood that it remains today. Holmby Hills unique English-style lamp posts, lush landscapes, large lots, and Tudor-style homes differentiate it from its neighboring counterparts.

The Holmby Hills community boasts sophistication and elegance, while its unique appeal is rooted in the many beautifully engineered and meticulously constructed Holmby Hills homes that populate the area. Residents of Holmby Hills are rewarded with large lots and incredible architecture, while many homes boast panoramic views of the entire Los Angeles Basin. The exclusivity of the Holmby Hills community speaks volumes about its desirability.

A main destination for Holmby Hills residents is Holmby Park. Located just South of Sunset Blvd, Holmby Park offers rolling green fields and walking paths, playgrounds and a 9-hole pitch and put golf course. The Holmby Park Bowling Club dates back to 1927 and features its own bowling green. For those needing something a bit more challenging than pitch an putt, can access the Los Angeles Country Club and the elite Bel-Air Country Club, bon only minutes from Holmby Park.
